Karin Weber Gallery is excited to collaborate with local veteran May Fung as a curator for a captivating solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Kensa Hung. This project marks the gallery’s inaugural collaboration with May Fung as well as the debut showcase of the artist’s paintings in our gallery.
Fung remarks, “When I first came across this batch of paintings created by Kensa Hung, I saw different animals in strange colours living in bizarre spaces. It was a mental shock to me.”
This same sense of bewilderment is set to reverberate within our transformed gallery space-turned-jungle. ‘Fables in the Wilderness’ transports viewers to fantastical, nature-inspired realms, where a lush, primordial jungle teems with vividly hued flora and fauna, while a surreal underwater world depicts sinuous ribbons of kelp intertwined with mystical, jewel-toned fish.
The paintings exude a sense of coiled energy, with undulating serpentine forms weaving through a kaleidoscope of neon greens and purples. Collectively, these imaginative works invite the viewer to explore the wonders of the natural world through a magical, dreamlike lens.
“Biology was once my area of greatest academic interest. I was captivated by the taxonomic classification of organisms based on their evolutionary relationships, committing the details to memory with a fervent enthusiasm," says artist Kensa Hung.
About the Artist:
Kensa Hung (b. 1993, Hong Kong) graduated from the Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity (HKICC) in 2012. With a background in Chinese calligraphy and stone carving and a passion for the vernacular, Hung's multi- and cross-disciplinary creative practice spans painting, illustration, graphic design, arts education, and stage production. He is also a great appreciator of nature, with a specific interest in wildlife. In 2017, he published a collection of drawings titled The Bowl of Water. Most recent exhibitions include ‘Urban Species’ at MUSTHAVEKEYS, Hong Kong (2023), ‘Tiger A(r)m Strong Biennale – The Tailed Scar’ at the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity Gallery, HK (2023), and 'Wonder-Verse: Artzioneer Metaverse Experiential Space' at K11 Art Mall, HK (2022).
About the Curator:
May Fung is the founder of Art and Culture Outreach, a cultural organisation housed in Foo Tak Building, Wan Chai and Videotage, both in Hong Kong. She was the former school principal of the HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity and is a seasoned cultural worker and video artist whose own work is held in the collection of M+ Hong Kong.
