Ken Vandermark (US) and Terrie Hessels (NL) have been playing together for years. The reed player from Chicago has been a guest at The Ex almost 100 times and the two are also part of Lean Left, an explosive improvising quartet with Andy Moor and Paal Nilssen-Love. It took until 2014 before they stood on stage as a duo for the first time. A dozen concerts followed on various stages and now they present their duo album, ‘This is not a Holiday’ (Terp).
KEN VANDERMARK
Over the past quarter century, Ken Vandermark has grown into an internationally acclaimed composer, improviser and bandleader. Vandermark studied film and is largely self-taught in music. That has not stopped him from building an enormous network in the United States and Europe. He was the one who brought Joe McPhee back into the spotlight and started an intense collaboration with European heavyweights like Peter Brötzmann, Mats Gustafsson and The Ex. His flagship was The Vandermark 5 for years, but he has numerous bands. Some energetic and creative with composed material, others more abstract-subdued and/or completely free. But improvisation is always central.

TERRIE HESSELS
Most recently with the EX in the Effenaar and now in POM. More than 40 years (!) of activity and 2000 concerts with The Ex. Hundreds of performances as an improviser with diverse people such as Han Bennink, Colin Stetson, Thurston Moore, Peter Zegveld, Steve Albini, Mats Gustafsson, Kaja Draksler, Jaap Blonk, etc. A private label (Terp), countless trips to Ethiopia and lots of music from those parts. Animal lover (anything except dogs) and amateur plumber. 1 guitar. A unique imagination and that grin do the rest.
