The Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker, in the Borough of Brentwood in the English county of Essex, CM15 0LA, is a large underground bunker maintained during the Cold War as a potential regional government headquarters. Since being decommissioned in 1992, the bunker has been open to the public as a tourist attraction.
The Kelvedon Hatch bunker was built in 1952–53 as part of ROTOR. ROTOR was a programme to improve and harden Britain’s air defence network. The bunker is built 125 feet (38 m) underground and the entrance is through an ordinary-looking bungalow set amongst trees. The inside of the bungalow leads to a 100-yard-long (91 m) tunnel entering the R4 at its lowest floor (of three). Above are two more floors, the ‘hill’ which covers it, and a radio mast some distance away.
Most experiences at the bunker have been reported from various paranormal investigations over the years – with experiences ranging from poltergeist activity, EVP recordings and apparitions.
Visitors have reported the feeling of being watched when exploring the building and spotting a grey figure of an unusually tall old lady moving from room to room. Other sightings include an RAF officer and a woman in uniform telling people to leave the building. One visitor claimed he heard a disembodied voice in the dormitory, telling him to ‘go back’ – but no one was there.
The sick bay is the main hotspot for paranormal activity. Dark figures have been spotted roaming here. The eeriest reports include a very dark and demon-like entity that cloaks people in darkness in the sick bay area of the bunker.
