About this Event

Kek Lapis Compost Masterclass

Join us for a 3-hour instructive and hands-on compost masterclass, inspired by our daily surroundings and regional food culture!
Learn how to turn kitchen scraps, garden clippings, fallen leaves, and even hardwood shavings into crumbly, dark-colored compost teeming with life. Learn a composting method that works in Singapore regardless of the size of your composting setup. Learn why composting does not equate to having to deal with rotting food, foul-smelling mounds, or unwanted animal attention.
Understand why compost-making, in ways that feed the soil, is a good way to connect with Nature's rhythms, and a form of climate action that anybody can participate in.

Get clarity
What do we mean by composting, compost, soil, food scraps, landfill, and working with Nature?
Get questions answered
If you were ever confused about what goes into a compost pile, how to put organic materials together, and whether the compost you made is going to be helpful for the soil or plants, this masterclass has you covered. Learn the approach Cuifen takes with others, to create aerobic thermal compost heaps in public parks. The same method works for table-top containers!
Get hands-on
Learn step-by-step how to prepare the materials, and create compost heaps in everyday containers or on the soil.
Be part of a community
Be part of a group that learns together! We will connect over kek, fruits, and drinks. Katherine, our venue host, will share her composting experience with neighbours, as well as her composting experiences in the United Kingdom.
Embark on your own Kek Lapis Composting journey
Bring home a compost kit (optional) to get started at home right away.

Trainer
Cuifen Pui
A compost artisan, Cuifen draws inspiration from observations, learning about the soil food web, and interactions with like-minded peers. She divides her energy between probono projects (Boon Lay Nature Garden and Project Black Gold) and knowledge-sharing workshops through Food Citizen Pte Ltd. Cuifen's compost-related experiments and workshops have sparked initiatives at various locations, including Bukit Gombak Park, Gardens by the Roof, Jurong Central Park, Jurong Lake Gardens, and Jurong Regional Library. She advocates for individuals to take climate action where they live.
