This performance brings together two of the Midwest’s most articulate and experienced jazz voices: pianist Keigo Hirakawa and saxophonist David Bixler. United by a dedication to improvisation and original composition, this collaboration represents a meeting of deep musical lineage and forward-thinking expression.
Keigo Hirakawa, a pianist who has evolved from a student of the masters into a visionary artist with a unique sense of expression. With seven full-length album appearances—three as a leader—Hirakawa is renowned across the U.S. and internationally for his articulate use of harmonic and rhythmic vocabulary. A fixture of the Midwest scene, his playing is defined by a willingness to be musically spontaneous, fearlessly exploring original compositions and redefining standards.
Joining him is David Bixler who brings a grit and depth honed by thirty years in the New York City jazz scene. A former touring member of the Lionel Hampton and Toshiko Akiyoshi big bands, Bixler spent a decade with the Chico O’Farrill Afro-Cuban Big Band, contributing to their Latin GRAMMY-winning recording Final Night at Birdland. Following a period of personal reflection and a "humbling reboot" of his artistic priorities, Bixler has entered a prolific creative era, releasing multiple acclaimed projects including In the Face of Chaos and The Langston Hughes Project. He currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at Bowling Green State University and hosts the Liner Notes podcast.
Together, Hirakawa and Bixler offer an evening of high-level interaction, merging the storytelling of a veteran saxophonist with the harmonic adventurousness of a pianist at the height of his powers.
