You may be wondering: What is a KEF NIGHT and why should I come?
KEF NIGHT is a joyful Armenian tradition rooted in resilience. After the Armenian Genocide, refugees brought with them not only family recipes and faith, but also their music. In homes across cities like Watertown, Fresno, and Providence, they gathered to cook, play the oud and duduk, sing, and dance. These gatherings became known as “making kef.”
Over time, this tradition moved from homes to nightclubs and halls, giving rise to legendary Armenian folk bands—none more beloved than the "Kef Time Band", founded in 1963 by Richard Hagopian of Fowler, California. A master musician and cultural icon, Hagopian helped preserve the music of Western Armenia and was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Now, that legacy lives on through Richard Hagopian’s grandson, Andrew, leader of the Andrew Hagopian Ensemble—one of today’s leading Armenian folk bands. Hosting this ensemble at KEF NIGHT at St. Andrew Armenian Church is a rare and meaningful event.
So, what’s KEF NIGHT today? It’s a party. But it’s also a tribute. A way to dance, celebrate, and honor our ancestors by keeping their traditions alive.
As Bob Marley said: “In this great future, you can’t forget your past.” We hope you’ll join us on August 16 at KEF NIGHT to celebrate both.
