“Keepers of the Earth”
Dr. Shawn Renee Forman is a Detroit based artist who has been refining her skills as a fine art and cultural photographer since 1979 when she received her first camera, a Pentax K1000. Locally and abroad, her focus has been shooting candid photographs that capture the true spirit of people partaking in their everyday lives. She aspires to bring attention to overlooked social matters, display beauty to that which is not considered beautiful, and provide thought-provoking opportunities to connect. Prior to receiving a Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography in 2009 from Wayne State University, Dr. Forman was self-taught. Her work has been exhibited in a variety of galleries in and around metropolitan Detroit: the Detroit Design Festival, The Beholder: Observing From Behind the Lens, the Gilda Snowden Memorial Exhibition at The Scarab Club, the Photography exhibition at Lawrence Street Gallery, Griot at the Norwest Gallery, Detroit Art, Teachers Association exhibition at the Kayrod Gallery, I’m Still Teaching exhibition at Wayne County Community College, and was featured in the 100th Anniversary of Alex Haley, Widening the View in America documentary. In 2020, she won Best in Show at the All Media Exhibition at the Detroit Artist Market. Dr. Forman believes that photographs hold time still and give the viewer a moment to escape reality.
