Honoring true Culture Icons
About this Event

On Saturday, February 22, 2025 from 5:00pm-7:30pm the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art will honor it's 2025 Keepers of the Culture recipients. We are pleased to collaborate with the San Diego History Center as we honor true cultural icons.

Join us in showing appreciation to:

  • California Secretary of State, Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. California's first Black Secretary of State. While serving in the Assembly Dr. Weber authored Assembly Bill 3121, which created a California Reparations Task Force to study how to redress slavery in California. She is known nationally and internationally for contributions to the field of education and particularly her work to establish the discipline of Africana Studies.
  • The Cooper Family Foundation. Long before Juneteench was recognized as a federal holiday in the U.S., Sidney Cooper Sr. started the celebration here in San Diego. His family has continued the celebration and it is now the largest Juneteenth celebration in San Diego County.
  • Ron Dhanifu. Jazz is rooted in the Black experience. Renown radio programmer. Ron Dhanifu has used his vast knowledge to expose us to jazz, it's cultural significance, and the influence it has had on music globally. If it's jazz, Ron Dhanifu delivers on KNSD Jazz 88.3.
  • Martha R. Logan. Historically, Black sororities and fraternities have been at the forefront of racial uplift, community service, civil rights and brother/sisterhood. Martha Logan has shown extraordinary leadership in the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority (AKA) having achieved 75 vears of uninterrupted membership in the sorority.

The doors will open at 5pm for a reception featuring Grammy Award-winning record producer Kamau Kenyatta. The program will begin at 6pm.

This event is free but space is limited.

'The Keepers of the Culture event is made possible through generous donations including the Cathy Paulette Hamilton Memorial Fund.
