On a recent Friday night in SOMA on his way to The STUD, our DISCO DADDY aka DJ Bus Station John tripped and fell on a raised crack in the sidewalk near 7th & Folsom, shattering his shoulder when he hit the cement. While lying face down on the pavement in a state of shock---and to add insult to (literal) injury---BSJ was robbed of his wallet by a passerby who'd initially approached him pretending to "help."A bright light in San Francisco's LGBTQ+ nightlife for 25+ years, DJing and producing parties like the long-running DISCO DADDY @ The SF Eagle, The Tubesteak Connection @ Aunt Charlie's Lounge, and DISCO DADDY Does LA @ Akbar in Silverlake, BSJ has just undergone surgery to repair multiple fractures in his left shoulder, and now faces the painful, lengthy process of recovery and physical therapy to help regain the use of his arm.
This major life setback will put him out of the DJ booth and away from his beloved turntables for many months to come. Thankfully BSJ has insurance to cover the bulk of his medical bills, but everyday expenses like rent, utilities, food, non-covered therapy treatment and other survival essentials loom ahead.
Widely respected as a "vinyl archaeologist," BSJ has long carried the torch for original, unadulterated disco and its sister genres both classic and rare, digging deep to shine a light on musical treasures that might otherwise be lost to time (and celebrating the talents of the artists who crafted them).
For more than two decades his cell phone-free nightlife experiences have elevated dancers' spirits and encouraged (re)connection, leading to the creation of a special, intergenerational community of music lovers from every walk of life---a dynamic rarely found on dance floors these days.
