In India, Kawandi means Quilt. This is a very interesting technique of assembling a quilt using recycled materials and stitching entirely by hand. It was developed by the Siddi women of African decent, now living in India. The quilt pictured for the class is a lap size quilt. For the purpose of learning, and finishing this project by the end of the class sessions, we will be making a smaller piece. In the supply list, we mention using scraps of well worn clothing. This idea for a quilt would be perfect for a memory quilt.
Laurie Hermundson and Donna Kraft are teaming up to share their knowledge of this hand stitching Kawandi technique.
