About this Event

Karma Bellydance is proud to announce Nikita as our workshop instructor for 2022!

Nikki “Nikita” Gomez’ is a lifelong lover of movement, health and wellness! She is a mother, dancer, licensed physical therapist assistant and World Dance Workout instructor. She enjoys learning from and educating others.

She took dance classes during her childhood and as an adult has fallen head over heels for world dance. In 98’ she attended a West African Drum and Dance concert and instantly fell in love. This experience ignited the desire to study a variety of styles of the African Diaspora. In ‘01 she was introduced to Middle Eastern Dance while living in Sarasota FL by “Nirvana” Hamlett, and later Belly Dance Fusion at the Tree of Life Cultural Arts Studio. She has attended countless dance classes, workshops and conferences across the Mid-West and abroad for the past 2 decades, including traveling to Guinea, West Africa in 06’ and 08’ with Like Water Drum and Dance for 3 week long drum and dance intensives.

Nikki has performed across the Mid-West at music festival, art festivals and special events as a solo artist and with Kuungana Drum and Dance, Like Water Drum & Dance, Tree of Life Drum and Dance Society, Tableau Cadre Movement Ensemble and currently The Sultretts, a multidisciplinary dance troupe featuring belly dance, fire, LED and burlesque fusion.

She has taught dance classes in the Fenton and Grand Blanc area for the past 15 years to students of all ages, and has created multiple award winning choreographies for the competition team while working at Ms. Bridget’s School of Dance of Fenton.

Nikki considers herself a lifelong student and is humbled to have the opportunity to honor her favorite styles of dance by teaching 2 workshops. The African and Middle Eastern Diasporas have been inspiring and feeding her soul for many years and she is thrilled to share her knowledge.

WORKSHOP INFORMATION

Workshop 1: Yankadi - Macru Dance History and Tech

In this workshop we will explore two West African rhythms that are traditionally played together and its dance history. We will discuss the dance’s origin, the village that created it, the story it tells or purpose it is danced for and the beautiful movements of the dance. This will be a great class for all levels of experience. (90 minutes)

Workshop 2: Afro Belly Fusion

In this workshop we will fuse what we have learned in the previous workshop with belly dance movements to created fun and sultry combos! We will then put those combos together and learn a choreography. Each participant will have the opportunity to take what we have learned to the stage in the finale at the Karma Bellydance showcase!
