We are delighted to welcome inspirational saxophonist, Karen Sharp, to Smokey Joe’s. We love Karen’s playing, and we’re very excited about her debut appearance at Smokey Joe’s! Karen plays tenor and baritone saxes, and she is a prolific player on the UK Jazz scene. She has won the British Jazz Awards for best tenor saxophonist on numerous occasions, and she was nominated in the rising star category of the Downbeat Critics Poll for baritone sax in 2018 and 2019.
Asked about her early influences, Karen cites the two giants of improvisation, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. Her career took off when she was asked to join Humphrey Lyttelton's band who she toured with for four years, and at the same time, she went on to form her own quintet and recorded six albums as a leader. Karen went on to work alongside John and Jacqui Dankworth, Ken Peplowski, Alan Barnes, Tina May, Nikki Iles, Esther Miller, Jeremy Pelt, Howard Alden, Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache, Scott Robinson and Harry Allen. Highlights of this period include the Ginza Festival in Tokyo, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival and the Singapore International Jazz Festival.
Karen’s more recent work has involved larger ensembles and Karen was delighted to be part of the 'Guy Barker Big Band' performance at the BBC Proms. She has also played with Robert Fowler's 'Gerry Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band', Steve Waterman's Big Band, the Stan Tracey Big Band and the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra.
Karen plays with energy, lyricism, beauty and creativity. She is always pushing musical boundaries, and carries her fellow musicians and audiences into incredible improvisations, compositions and interpretations of jazz standards.
Joining Karen tonight, we have the awesome house band, with the flying socks and passion of Alex Steele on piano; the mighty groove merchant, Mike Cypher on drums; and the beautifully melodic, lyrical and effervescent, ‘Moyk’ Green on double bass. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
