Our changing world is a huge challenge - for our schools, for ourselves as educators, and for our communities:

  • Amos Yong will give our keynote address on how our schools can find new opportunities amid the challenges of digitalization, globalization and pluralization by relying on the Holy Spirit. Discussion will follow with Fernando Tamara, Philip Thompson and more.
  • Michaela O'Donnell and Meryl Herr will lead a collaboration focused on our own formation as educators facing these challenges - how we can find life-giving renewal in our vocational circumstances.
  • Denise Daniels will help us explore what's emerging in the world of Christian entrepreneurship, as God's people find new ways of bringing life to the world – including an exciting conversation with Denver entrepreneur Helen Young Hayes, former powerhouse executive at global investment fund Janus and now founder of ActivateWork, which helps marginalized workers succeed (see Faith & Co.'s gripping profile of Hayes and ActivateWork, "Second Chances").
  • Kara Martin will lead our annual Global Session, this year featuring colleagues from Africa and South America.
  • Jeff Hoffmeyer will introduce us to local ministries embodying the mission of God in Denver.

We’ll start in the evening on Thursday, Nov. 17, and finish up by midday on Friday, Nov. 18. So if you’re attending either ETS or AAR/SBL, Karam Forum is an easy add-on to that trip.

Karam Forum is a gathering for theological educators and Christian academics. Leading Bible and theology scholars will help you train a new generation of Christians who follow King Jesus by loving their neighbors in their daily tasks. Faithful discipleship to Christ involves working every day in homes, workplaces, and communities to help God’s world flourish.

Karam, the Hebrew verb meaning “to tend vineyards,” communicates the vast range of work that goes into creating a healthy and flourishing vineyard. Vineyards need tending – bearing fruit, flourishing, requires careful and creative work.

Throughout the Old Testament, Israel is described as a vineyard, a people planted and tended by God. The gleaning laws require that vineyards be places where people of all social stations have the opportunity to flourish interdependently, through a combination of generosity and diligent work. Most important to us is our Lord’s uses of the vineyard image. In particular, Christ said that he was the vine and we were his branches. This image sums up our commitment to whole-life discipleship as the root of all we do.
