In parallel with the exhibition Victor Horta and the Grammar of Art Nouveau, the French and Canadian artist Kapwani Kiwanga has created a new work at Bozar’s invitation: a rug with an ornamental floral pattern, titled Rootwork. The decorative allure of this floor covering is inspired by Art Nouveau and alludes to shared histories between territories that were home to botanic species which were imported to Belgium.
Kapwani Kiwanga is a conceptual, multimedia artist working in sculpture, installation, sound, film and performance. Her work is often based on archival research. Kiwanga addresses not only our past but also our future.
Kiwanga was the inaurugal winner of the Frieze Artist Award (2018); the Sobey Prize for the Arts (Canada 2018), the Prix Marcel Duchamp (2020) and the Zurich Art Prize (2022). She is a 2023 Guggenheim Fellow and was a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard University in 2022-23. She is currently showing her first major survey at Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg as well as a major commission at the Capc Musée d'art contemporain Bordeaux. A solo exhibition will follow later this autumn at the Fundação de Serralves, Porto. In 2024, she will represent Canada at the Venice Biennale.
