ABOUT THE CONCERT

The program for this CD and release concert includes pieces that Kappella Kyrie has worked on for the last several years, plus new works this season. At the end of last season, Kappella Kyrie began recording several selections, everything from Kyrylo Stetsenko’s ,,Благослови, душе моя, Господа” (Bless the Lord, O My Soul) from his Vespers, to an arrangement of Dolly Parton’s Light of the Clear Blue Morning. One of Kappella Kyrie’s two recording sessions in June 2023 was with the talented, young Ukrainian baritone, Yurii Hryhorash. Kappella Kyrie’s recording journey continued this season with works such as Artem Vedel’s ,,Нині отпущаєши’’ (Lord, Now Lettest Thou), written in the choral concerto style of the Baroque period, and Ukrainian Alleluia by American composer, Craig Courtney.

In addition, Kappella Kyrie commissioned Edmonton composer, Diana Tayler who has written a piece titled “The Resurrection.” It sets a poem by the award-winning Ukrainian poet, publisher, visual artist and political activist Marjana Savka and is about the optimistic spirit of so many Ukrainians fighting for their country.

Kappella Kyrie is looking forward to concluding their 2023-24 season with a concert and formal reception on May 30, 2024 to officially release the professional recordings of these meaningful pieces, largely by Ukrainian or Ukrainian-Canadian composers. Kappella Kyrie looks forward to sharing this milestone with their generous donors, colleagues, families, and friends, alongside the greater community of Ukrainian-Canadians.

ABOUT THE CHOIR

In the spring of 2010, Dr. Melanie Turgeon (Professor of Music and Choral Conductor at The King’s University in Edmonton, Alberta) and others decided to begin assembling Kappella Kyrie. The founders shared a conviction that the Edmonton community would benefit significantly from having a Chamber Choir primarily devoted to Slavic sacred music. The music of the Eastern Churches is rich, and Kappella Kyrie desires to share this treasured music with a broader public. However, this ensemble does not restrict itself to performing only this genre of music. They explore a variety of repertoire, with a consistent consciousness to uphold Slavic music.

Kappella Kyrie joined with Shumayela, an Edmonton based choir for treble and changing voices, to perform “Praise: An Evening of Psalm Texts" on May 13, 2023.

On November 26, 2022 Kappella Kyrie performed "Seen the True Light" with Ukrainian baritone, Yurii Hryhorash.

Kappella Kyrie was deeply honoured to partner once again with Richard Eaton Singers on June 19, 2022 for a special fundraising concert at Edmonton’s Winspear Centre, that raised $22,000 for those who have recently moved to Edmonton and area, as they flee the war in Ukraine.

February 29, 2020 - Kappella Kyrie performed its 10th anniversary concert, “A Journey Through Lent” with The King’s University Chamber Choir featuring Dr. Joachim Segger (piano) and Dr. Charles Stolte (saxophone) both from the King’s Music Faculty.

June 2019 - Canadian premier of Artem Vedel' choral concerto "I Entreated Thy Favour" with soloists and Baroque orchestra.

2019 Choral Canada National Competition - placed 1st in the Pan-Cultural Traditions Category.
