Kaniksu Folk School is an initiative of Kaniksu Land Trust that offers traditional skills courses for adults, families, and children. Each class may have age restrictions. This class will introduce the basics of broom making including sorting broom corn, slip knots, use of a foot spindle, wrapping and tying off the handle, sewing, and trimming. Students can expect to make at least two wisk brooms and/or pot scrubbers, probably more. Broom corn, used to make the brooms, is a type of sorghum grass originally from Africa and reportedly brought to North America by Benjamin Franklin. Handcrafted brooms have largely been replaced by machine-made but the craft lives on creating useful and beautiful tools and decorative pieces.
