Kalamazoo City Commission Regular Business Meeting

A twice-monthly, regular business meeting of the Kalamazoo City Commission, held in City Commission chambers on the second floor of City Hall at 241 W. South St. As required by the Michigan Open Meetings Act, there is a non-agenda, public comments opportunity early in the meeting, under item "E. PUBLIC COMMENTS" on the agenda. During this time, anyone is permitted to speak on any topic of their choice for up to 4 minutes. Profanity is permitted, but the board chair (Mayor) may turn off your microphone. There are additional public comment opportunities for items on the agenda under "F. PUBLIC HEARINGS" and "H. REGULAR AGENDA". When those agenda items are opened up for public comment, citizens must limit their remarks to topics relevant to the agenda item under consideration.
These meetings are telecast live on Public Media Network (PMN) and streamed live on YouTube, Facebook, and PMN's website. Recordings of these meetings are also available for later viewing on YouTube, Facebook, and PMN's website. When you address the Commission, you are speaking not only to the City Commissioners, but also the city staff, local media, and members of the general public who are in attendance and watching live or recorded on YouTube, Facebook, and PMN. Agenda packets are typically published on the Thursday preceding each meeting. When available, they are posted at https://kalamazoomi.portal.civicclerk.com/?category_id=26
Business meetings are usually proceeded by a Committee of the Whole (CoW) meeting at 5 p.m. These meetings primarily consist of staff presentations and Commissioner questions and answers. The Commission may discuss business meeting action items, but they usually don't vote on things at CoW meetings. As required by the Michigan Open Meetings Act, there is also a public comment opportunity at the beginning of these meetings, but the time limit is reduced to 2 minutes per person. These meetings are subject to cancellation due to a lack of agenda items.
See the full annual schedule of regular City Commission business, CoW, budget retreat, and budget work session meetings at https://kalamazoomi.portal.civicclerk.com/event/899/files/attachment/10798
The Commission has an option of calling a special meeting at any time, with as little as 18 hours public notice. When those meetings are called, notice can be found on the city's social media profiles, the City Clerk's notice board outside of City hall, and on-line at https://www.kalamazoocity.org/Government/Boards-Commissions/Special-Meeting-Notices
