About this Event
Welcome the New Year with kakizome (書き初め) - the traditional first calligraphy of the year.
Kakkoii Social Japanese Club is excited to welcome , a Japanese calligraphy instructor, for a special hands-on workshop conducted entirely in Japanese. Your host @KiaraNYCjp will be going around the room ensuring everyone understands the instructions and translating when necessary!
In this session, participants will:
- Learn the basics of Japanese calligraphy (shodō)
- Practice brush technique, stroke order, and balance
- Create their own kakizome piece to mark the New Year with intention
This workshop is designed to be both cultural and linguistic, offering a rare opportunity to study Japanese through an authentic art form.
💬 Language Level
This event will be conducted in Japanese and is best suited for:
- Intermediate to advanced learners of Japanese
- Native or heritage Japanese speakers
To support participants, a vocabulary list of key words and phrases commonly used during the lesson will be sent out in advance.

Each ticket includes:
- A guided calligraphy lesson with SEICHO-san
- All calligraphy materials (brush, ink, paper, etc.)
- One free café drink*
- Your completed kakizome to take home
☕ Venue
The workshop will be held at Cafe O’Te - a space built with creativity and Japanese artistry in mind - a perfect place for slowing down and welcoming the New Year with focus and calm.
⚠️ Notes
- Space is limited to ensure individual guidance.
- Ink may stain - please dress accordingly.
- No prior calligraphy experience is required, but Japanese comprehension is strongly recommended.
- We start promptly at 10:30am, so please arrive at 10am to order your drink/food and settle in.
