Kadomatsu Demonstration

Kadomatsu or “gate pines” are a beautiful decoration you can see all across Japan during the New Year season. These displays are always placed in pairs at the front entrances of businesses, shops, temples and homes. They utilize the famous “three friends of winter” or Sho Chiku Bai with stands for pine, bamboo and plum. Pine is a symbol of constancy and longevity; bamboo of uprightness and resilience; and plum of purity and renewal. You can see this winter trio in many works of art and decorative arrangements in Japan and other parts of Asia. Come join us for this demonstration as our Garden Curator and Head Niwashi arranges our kadomatsu step by step.

Saturday, December 12
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm
The demonstration is free as long as you have paid for general admission.

Also check out our holiday decoration workshop using kokedama (moss balls) after the demonstration and bring your home your own kokedama for the winter season. Workshop pricing and schedule for this separate workshop can be found here: https://www.japanesefriendshipgarden.org/workshops
