Life twists and turns, but it always brings us back to ourselves. LA-based singer-songwriter jxdn hasreached gold status, tallied over one billion streams and counting, collaborated with icons, sold out headline tours, and garnered widespread acclaim. In between, he endured loss, struggled through mental health, faced addiction, and realized who he was meant to be all along.
Armed with wisdom and a deliberate vision for the future, jxdn reintroduces himself in 2024.
“I lost myself for a while,” he states. “I didn’t know how to cope with everything. I focused and began to learn a lot though. This is the beginning of a whole new journey, and I’m getting back to my roots and why I make music.”
Raised by two pastors, he spent the bulk of his early childhood in Texas. Without much money or resources, he retreated into music as an escape. After watching the documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, he intently focused on cultivating his voice. “Even though we were really poor and I wasn’t allowed to go to shows, I tried to manifest my future,” he recalls. “I literally said, ‘I’m going to do something big someday’.” By the time he turned 14, the family relocated to Chattanooga, TN.
As a senior in high school, he snuck out to a Juice WRLD concert (his first). When the entire crowd of 10,000-plus chanted along to the lyrics, “I’m empty, I feel so goddamn empty,” it sealed his fate.
“I felt like my ears and eyes had changed,” he goes on. “I thought, ‘If Juice WRLD can do this for me, I have to try to do this for somebody else’.”
He got his chance just a few years later in 2020. He linked up with iconic blink-182 drummer and DTA Records founder Travis Barker who promptly signed him. At this point, he hopped on a three-year rollercoaster as “jxdn.” Following his introductory single “Comatose,” he served up the gold-certified “ANGELS & DEMONS.” The latter also bulldozed the way for his 2021 full-length debut album, Tell Me About Tomorrow, highlighted by “SO WHAT!,” “BETTER OFF DEAD,” “TONIGHT” [feat. iann dior], and “WANNA BE” [feat. Machine Gun Kelly], to name a few. Beyond television performances on ELLEN and Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, his showstopping MTV Push rendition of “Think About Me” garnered a nomination for “Push Performance of the Year” at the MTV VMAs. In the meantime, he packed houses on tour coast-to-coast.
However, tragedy struck hard. He lost his best friend Cooper Noriega to an overdose. Struggling with his own mental health and addiction, jxdn chose to get help. During 2023, he spent two months in rehab and left “fully sober.”
The music evolved with him. He clung tightly to his roots, channeled his most formative inspirations, and creatively leapt forward.
“There’s a rawness to what I’m doing,” he notes. “It’s not all pretty and perfect. It’s cool to be able to express myself in a little different way, but it still feels like me.”
In the end, jxdn knows who he is, and he’s saying it loud and clear.
“My past doesn’t define me,” he leaves off. “I’ve gone through all of that, so I can be who I’m supposed to be. I won’t give up. I’ve learned a lot of lessons, and I hope to learn more. I didn’t know how precious life is until recently. I’m not just alive, but I’m living. Music healed me, and I think it heals everyone. I want to be part of that.”
