About our presenter:
Justin Rice is a performer and singer-songwriter from Safety Harbor, Florida. With his saxophone and guitar, Justin plays tunes across the genres including blues, reggae, rock, folk, pop, jazz, and more. “Live looping” is a feature of Justin’s performances where he combines his instruments to create a one man band composition and bridge together live vocal harmonies, guitar leads, saxophone, and beatbox on the spot. In addition to solo performances, Justin plays guitar, saxophone, and sings in his principal band "Cosmic Jenkins." He also plays tenor saxophone in the 15 piece band "Mr. Whiskers & The 9 Lives," which plays regularly at 3 Daughters in St. Pete. His latest project is "Mile Long Band" with Zach Short, another prominent guitar player and songwriter in Tampa Bay.
BIG NEWS!
In the second half of the August meeting you will have two exciting opportunities to play your guitar. One is targeted to beginners and rusty players (affectionately called “Rookies and Rusties”) and the other is for seasoned players and songwriters (Minors and Majors).
FOR THE ROOKIES: The new Rookies sessions will be a play-along format, for beginners and rusty players. In this format, everyone plays simple familiar songs together. Very supportive, very easy, very fun. Each month, we’ll send out the songs we’ll cover, as well as a video link and song sheets for each.
Here’s how the Rookies sessions will work:
1. We will continue to work on the classic song “Brown Eyed Girl.”
2. Attached is a song sheet for the song with lyrics and chords. (Plz print & bring)
3. At our next gathering, we’ll simply play announced songs together and learn from each other. One of us will be the “facilitator.” The “instructor” is the Youtube teacher (Justin Guitar). Easy, free, fun.
4. If we breeze this song, we have others. Or bring a song to play and share (plz bring 8+ copies).
Video: Brown Eyed Girl (note: don’t worry about the nifty intro riff)
FOR THE MINORS & MAJORS: We will continue with our Open Mic Song Circle format. The Open Mic format means you can play anything you like, in a welcoming circle setting. Play your song solo or invite others to join in. Try out one of your originals or a tune you’ve been working on or a classic for others to join in. The Song Circle setting is innovative since each person does a tune of their choice and then hands it off to the next person. Around the circle it keeps going until the clock runs out. Any style song, original or cover, instrumental or with vocals, solo or group, soft or loud. Your choice,
Club details:
The Guitar League generally meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month (February and March exceptions) from 6:30 PM to 9 PM (sign in & registration at 6:30) at Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School. The School Board of Pinellas County, FL is neither sponsoring, nor affiliated with this event.
At each meeting, the main presenter spends the first 50 minutes sharing a mixture of performing and discussing their craft, something truly unique in the entertainment industry. Next, we take a 20-minute break and then begin the educational portion of our program. After the main presenter we do breakout sessions that are designed to fit the varying skill levels (Rookies, Minors and Majors). Attendees are encouraged to bring their acoustic guitar, capo and tuner if they have one.
