Junkanoo Workshop
You’re Invited!
In preparation for this year’s Back to Angola Festival, October 19 and 20, The Bishop is partnering with festival organizers to host a Junkanoo Workshop, and you’re invited!
The annual festival at Manatee Minerals Springs Park honors the Bradenton Maroon community that lived on the site from the 1770s to 1821. It also celebrates the rich cultural history of Angola’s descendants who travel from Red Bay, Andros Island in The Bahamas back to Manatee Mineral Springs Park every year to pay respects to their ancestors.
The two-day festival showcases Bahamian culture through food, music, craftsmanship, storytelling, and Junkanoo! Junkanoo is the national cultural festival of the Bahamas and was originally brought to the islands by enslaved Africans. The festival fosters community pride as thousands work together to create beautifully elaborate and colorful Junkanoo costumes from cardboard and crepe paper.
During your visit to The Bishop on October 5 and 6, you are invited to pop by our Junkanoo Workshop. There you can contribute to the large community project or even create your own Junkanoo elements!
