About this Event
Juneteenth has long been sacred celebration in the African American community. Now with the 2022 declaration as a national federal holiday, with the theme of “Let’s Get Together”, and partnering with Tugaloo College, in remembrance and appreciation of our African American ancestors and forebearers, we present the Juneteenth Mississippi Homecoming (JMSH).
The JMSH will serve as mass family reunion and platform for the extended African American family who migrated north after slavery to cities like Chicago, Detroit, Milwaukee, St. Lous, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Oakland, Baltimore and Cleveland and New York City; to come back home to connect with and explore their Mississippi roots.
The Great Migration of African Americans from the Southern states to the North during the early to mid-20th century was a pivotal moment in American history, driven by the pursuit of economic opportunities and an escape from racial segregation. While many found success in the North, there is a growing interest among African Americans who were part of this migration to explore economic prospects back in their Southern roots, particularly during significant events like Juneteenth Weekend. This return to Mississippi represents not only a homecoming but an opportunity to contribute to and benefit from the economic growth of the region.
