If you didn't know, Black people were the leaders of the the abolitionist movement & the Underground Railroad in Detroit. In fact, the fight against slavery is what CREATED the Black community IN DETROIT!
And there were also white abolitionists in Detroit who played an important role in ending slavery.
The story of Juneteenth tells a larger story about the struggle for freedom and the complexities of the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment.
But Detroit has its own Juneteenth story too!
