Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom – Film Screening & Discussion

Join us for a powerful evening of film, reflection, and dialogue as we screen Juneteenth: Faith & Freedom, an award-winning documentary by acclaimed filmmaker Ya’Ke Smith.

This moving documentary invites viewers into the story of Juneteenth—the holiday recognizing the end of legalized slavery in Texas—through the eyes of a Black man learning about the holiday from the direct descendants of those liberated on that historic day. The film unpacks the harsh realities of slavery while uplifting the enduring power of faith, hope, and perseverance that sustained those who survived it.

The film features Ms. Opal Lee, 2022 Nobel Peace Prize nominee and widely known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth,” along with other prominent voices who helped preserve the observance of Juneteenth long before its recent federal recognition.

Following the screening, guests will be treated to a live discussion with filmmaker Ya’Ke Smith, led by Alexandria White, M.A., offering deeper insight into the film’s themes, historical context, and continued relevance today.

This event is open to the community and welcomes all who wish to learn, reflect, and honor the legacy of Juneteenth.
