About this Event

Welcome to gastrochurch. We do intentional conversations about spiritual things over really good food. We set a table and invite people from any background, culture, worldview, and identity. It's kind of a mashup between a dinner party and a small group, only with people you might otherwise never meet.

Here's how it works: when you show up, you'll sit at a table of six with people you may or may not know. Over the course of the evening, we'll give you three questions, meant to get you talking about something more substantive than the weather. You spend about 90 minutes eating, drinking, talking, laughing, connecting, and potentially meeting your new best friend. And then you go home and tell everyone how awesome it was and how you can't wait to come to the next gathering.

In 1865, word reached the enslaved people of Galveston that they were now free. The Emancipation Proclamation issued years earlier had finally trickled down and taken effect, bolstered by an additional proclamation from Union General Gordon Granger. On June 19th, people who had heard rumors of freedom now found themselves finally free. Every year since, people have gathered in churches and community centers to celebrate freedom.

Join us in this special gastrochurch as we join in the celebration. We’ll feast on some classic Galveston fare as we talk about freedom, rumors of freedom, and the continued legacy of Juneteenth.

PSA: We never want the cost of tickets to be a barrier to someone. Please reach out to Haley if you need assistance with a ticket. We have folks often buy extra tickets for us to giveaway! Contact Haley at 281-797-6754 or by email at [email protected]
