Sometimes the musicians indulge in traditional melodies, sometimes they play wild, lively
dances and every now and then a passion for experimentation breaks through: With their
music, Junaït create a world in which cultural and stylistic boundaries become unimportant,
in which only the music counts. The three musicians play a varied mixture of their own
arrangements of klezmer standards and south-east European folk tunes as well as modern
compositions and their own pieces. Their stylistic flexibility is of great benefit to them:
influences from classical music can be heard as well as traces of new music, Arabic music
and jazz.
Junaït have been travelling through the Balkans since mid-April. After three weeks in Skopje,
they are travelling on to Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia, then back to Lübeck via Vienna. The
journey, a mixture of educational trip and concert tour, will be made entirely by public
transport. As a result, the band is always in the midst of the action and gets to talk to people
who are not normally concert-goers. On site, the focus is as much on making music as it is
on listening to it. The musicians want to understand the local history, rhythms, melodies,
dances and traditions as well as convey their own music. The trip is supported by the
Goethe-Institut and the Förderergesellschaft der Musikhochschule Lübeck.
