June 14th:
Cultural Wellness Center: Juneteenth Freedom Walk & Living History Event
Join our Host, the Cultural Wellness Center, for a powerful Juneteenth commemoration that brings history to life through reenactment, storytelling, and discussion.
The event will begin on the Greenway with a dramatic reenactment of Major General Gordon Granger and his troops arriving in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—to publicly announce that all enslaved people were free.
Following the reenactment, participants will walk together to the Midtown Global Market, symbolizing the journey from slavery to freedom, resilience, and progress.
At the Midtown Global Market, history will come alive with a theatrical conversation between Harriet and Dred Scott, whose fight for freedom in the courts played a pivotal role in American history.
