This month's topic:
“Invasion is coming: A pilot study identifying the impact of Melinis repens invasion on Dicerandra modesta native habitat within utility and pipeline right-of-ways (ROWs)”, Presented by Shannon Boyle
Ecological disturbances caused by land clearing can permanently change the landscape. The Sabal Trail Transmission corridor has an invasive natal grass (Meninis repens) problem because of the installment of the pipeline. This has and continues to cause devastating effects on the native flora, particularly Dicerandra modesta. This pilot study focused on GPS locating, analyzing, and quantifying ground cover of invasive and native flora within the corridor and the edge of the adjacent protected land of Lake Marion Creek before any restoration efforts were made. We learn the rate at which invasive M. repens propagates, the most effective restoration method, and a better understanding of the needs of endangered native flora within utility corridors.
Shannon Boyle is currently a master's student at the University of Florida studying Wildlife Forensic Science and Conservation, to graduate August 2021. She received her Bachelor's degree from Florida Gulf Coast University studying Organismal Biology and Ecology, researching male giraffe behavior at the Naples Zoo and Botanical Garden. Interests include animal behavior, wildlife, sustainability and the effects of man-made infrastructures. In her free time, you’ll find Shannon reading, obsessing over my animals, being outside or hanging out with my friends.
