Domestic Chruch Date Night for Catholic Couples | July 25 at 7:00 p.m.
About this Event

The Saint John Paul II National Shrine invites all to join us in-person and virtually as we celebrate this July the very first World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly.

Here is the schedule for the evening:

7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Mass for the Grandparents and the Elderly (livestreamed on our Shrine's YouTube channel)

8:00 to 8:30 P.M. Light Reception (drinks and dessert)

8:30 to 9:30 P.M. Panel of Grandparents sharing about “Wisdom about Love” followed by a Q & A (livestreamed to a private Zoom event - you must register to get the link if you are attending the event virtually)

In particular, the grandparents will be sharing their wisdom about love that they have learned through the many years of marriage and life. The Mass & presentation will be livestreamed for virtual attendees.*

Panelists

Sam and Rob Fatzinger have been married for 32 years, have fourteen children, and, so far, 9 grandchildren. They are authors of the book A Catholic Guide to Spending Less and Living More. Their financial success story has been featured in publications including The Washington Post, Marketplace.org, EpicPew, Patheos, Aleteia, The Oakland Press, and the Daily Mail, as well as on The Chris Hogan Podcast (Dave Ramsey Ministries), Girlfriends, and EWTN Pro-Life Weekly.

Sam is a homemaker and homeschooler who serves as a principal of St. Peter the Rock Homeschool Tutorial and as a parish, family, retreat, and homeschool coordinator. Rob is a software quality assurance manager at ManTech International.

The couple lives in Bowie, Maryland.

Joseph and Nancy Atkinson have been married for 41 years, have 6 adult children and, so far, 4 grandchildren. Originally from eastern Canada, the family became US citizens about 20 years ago.Nancy worked as a Speech Language Pathologist (in Canada) and engaged in the wonderful task of homeschooling their six children from kindergarten to twelfth grade. In 2014 Nancy graduated from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, now Divine Mercy University, with a Masters in Clinical Psychology. She works as a Behavior Specialist at Community Support Services, training the Direct Support Staff of adults diagnosed with Autism and other disabilities.Joseph is a leading expert in the Biblical and theology foundations of the family. His book Biblical and Theological Foundations of the Family: The Domestic Church (CUA Press) shows extensive and ground-breaking research on the family’s role in salvation history. He is the founder of the Theology of the Family Project (TheologyOfTheFamily.com) and author of the 13-part DVD series Biblical Vision of Marriage and Family. He is the Associate Professor of Sacred Scripture at the John Paul II Institute at CUA and was the Executive Director of the Catholic Biblical Association.

Seraphine Tata has been married to Theophile since 1978, they have 4 children, and 3 grandchildren. Originally, Seraphine and Theophile are both from Cameroon.

In 1974, Seraphine moved to the United States and enrolled in White Plains College in upstate New York which was run by Catholic nuns. She then later graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park with a Masters Degree in Journalism. Then she returned to Cameroon and for over 20 years worked in various capacities in government broadcast media. During the last five years of her career she worked for a World Bank sponsored project on AIDS as a behavior change specialist focusing on youth. She also led community programs to empower women and youth to enhance their quality of life by creating awareness of their human potential, fighting against discriminatory cultural practices, and helping them access the social programs available to them.

In 2008, Seraphine returned to the United States with her family. She currently runs an NGO in Cameroon called “KISHERI,” which assists poor girls of college age caught in the battleground of the five years of political crisis in Cameroon. It is primarily a rescue project that houses and enrolls the girls in colleges and universities in comparatively safer areas of the country. She is also the president of the Catholic Women’s Association (CWA) branch at St Edward the Confessor’s Parish in Bowie Maryland. CWA is a Catholic lay apostolate and it offers women from Cameroon an avenue to practice their Catholic faith and evangelize through service to the Church and the community.

This event is part of the Shrine's Domestic Church Date Night series to increase married couples' faith, hope, love, and joy in their marriages! The date nights will take place once a month for six months (June to November) in the evening after the kids are (hopefully) asleep!

The next Domestic Church Date Night will take place virtually on Thursday, August 12.
