Canoeing & Camping in July!
About this Event

Who wants to go canoeing and camping at the end of July? Who is working on Camping Merit Badge or would like to start on it? If your answer is "Me, me!!" then we have an opportunity for you.
The troops are putting together a special canoeing and camping event the weekend of July 28th - 30th. Details are still coming together, but the plan is to canoe on Saturday, July 29th, or Sunday, July 30th. The troops would for sure camp overnight on Saturday and possibly on Friday night, too.
To get the plans solidified, we need to know who in our troops would like to canoe and camp with us by FRIDAY, JUNE 30th. If you would like to go, please sign-up on this Eventbrite. We will use the event roster to make the reservations. If you aren't signed up on Eventbrite then you won't have a canoe.
When? Weekend of July 28th - 30th (exact dates and time will be forthcoming).
Where? Canoeing on the Wapsipinicon River or on the Maquoketa River. Camping depends upon a few factors including which place we are able to rent the canoes from and which campgrounds have space available. We also need a solid headcount to make the reservations. So you need to sign-up on this Eventbrite.
Who? Troop 42 & Troop 442 Scouts and Leaders who have passed the BSA Swimmer test before the campout. Those who have not taken and passed this swim test in the last 12 months will have an opportunity to do so before this campout. We are making arrangements for the test and will communicate the date, time, and location. So watch for the email announcement.
How? Parents will need to transport their Scouts to the campout and pick-up their Scout(s) on Sunday. We will have access to the troop trailer, but we will not be taking the bus.
Why? Because it is awesome Scouting fun! Also, this is another tent camping opportunity which counts toward the overnight camping requirement of Camping Merit Badge. But wait, there's more! This will also satisfy one of the two required camping experiences (Camping MB req # 9b). If you haven't formally started the Camping MB, you must get permission from Scoutmaster Kevin Kropf AND from Assistant Scoutmaster Jon Ryan (both are very responsive to such email requests).
Cost? The estimated cost is $40. But it is dependent upon the number of people. The more people, the cheaper it will be for everyone. This includes the cost of camping, canoeing (including boat, paddles, and lifejacket), and food for the weekend.

This all depends upon river levels, of course. If the rivers are running too low then we'll have a bike ride instead. This too would satisfy the Camping MB experience requirement (9b).
