March brings us a great speaker as we host Julie Mattson! Julie owns On The Rivers Fly Fishing Company on Oklahoma’s Lower Mountain Fork River near Hochatown. Julie is a seasoned fly fishing guide and competitive angler with over 40 years of experience. Born and raised in Montana, her passion for fly fishing ignited at the age of 10 when she received a fly-tying kit for Christmas. Catching a fish on a self-tied fly solidified her lifelong dedication to the sport. Julie is going to share her experiences and help guide us through one of the most important skills a flyfisher needs—RIGGING!
Throughout her extensive career, Julie has guided in diverse locations, including over 13 years as an outfitter in Southeast Alaska and time on her home waters of Montana's Upper Madison River. She has also led fly fishing trips and taught numerous classes, ranging from basic 101 sessions to advanced casting and guide schools.
In 2022, Julie became a member of the USA Women's National & Worlds Fly Fishing Team. She represented the U.S. at the inaugural Women's World Fly Fishing Championship in Norway in July 2022 and contributed to the team's bronze medal win at the second Women's World Championship in Canada in September 2024.
Beyond guiding and competing, Julie is committed to education and mentorship. She conducts casting and Euro nymphing clinics and volunteers with organizations such as Reel Girls, Casting for Recovery, Boy Scouts, Healing Waters, Patriot Anglers, and serves as a mentor for the Mayfly Project, introducing fly fishing to children.
Julie's dedication to fly fishing is evident in her continuous pursuit of knowledge, her commitment to teaching, and her representation of the U.S. in international competitions.
