I am a musician and sound artist focused in improvised, experimental and contemporary music. During my career, I have been involved with range of musical genres from world music to classical music. However, last years I have dedicated my time to sound art and experimental music. I am a active member of contemporary music ensemble Sähkökitarakvartetti and I’ve collaborated with many different constellations and as a solo act. I have performed with musicians like: Teppo Hauta-aho, Kalle Kalima, Axel Dörner, Kriton Beyer, Harri Sjöström, Veli Kujala, Paul Pignon, Mikko Innanen, Lauri Hyvärinen, Rieko Okuda, Pauli Lyytinen and Emilio Gordoa. I’ve also appeared on international festivals such as: Sipoon Äänet Festival (2022, Sipoo), Jauna Musika Festival (2021, Vilna), Kontula Electronic (2020, Helsinki), Sola-festivaali (2019, Helsinki), Musica Nova (2019, Helsinki). I have released numerous recordings to name a few: 2018 Teppo Hauta-aho & Jukka Kääriäinen - Winter Suite, Creative Sourves Records and 2017 Kalmisto Trio – Meeting, Karkia Mistika Records. During the year 2022 I released 5 solo albums: “still haven’t got the humor”, “Rust”, “Saari” “Reverence” and “Häiriö”. Also albums “I” ja “II” with Sähkökitarakvartetti and album “Radial” with Guillaume Gargaud. Addition to albums, with Annika Fuhrmann I’ve cocomposed three sound art compositions comissioned by Finnish National Radio Yle1 “Sumu”, “Pyörät ne pyörivät ympäri” ja “Otteita Karanteeniäänipäiväkirjasta”.

is an austrian sound activist based in Graz, often simply credited as Herbst. Besides being passionate about field recordings, his interest lies in the creation of soundscapes with modular synth and effects. In addition to his solo work he is a regular member of ASTRO BLACK (/w Michael Masen), the MRM Trio (/w Marina Džukljev & Miodrag Gladović), MULM (/w Sara Zlanabitnik & Stephan Roiss) and Graphit (/w Klaus Wohlgemuth & Martin Pfeiffer). In 2019 he started the Bordone Ensemble, an improvisation group of musicians and artists with varying line-up, who focus on drone, noise and ambient music. He is frequently involved in collaborations with Yvonne Hofmeister, Stephan Roiss, Sara Zlanabitnig, Rudi Fischerlehner, Michl Laab, Michael Masen, Michael Eisl, Max Winter, Markus Krispel, Irene Kepl, Harald Hofmeister, Gigi Gratt, Christian Zollner, Angélica Castelló, Alexandra Steßl… . Herbst is part of the vibrant free impro music scene in Graz and Bistrica Ob Sotli, participating in STIO (Styrian Improvisers Orchestra) and the GIS orchestra (Schl8hof Wels).
In 2001 he cofounded Interstellar Records, a noise-experimental label. He organizes concerts in irregular intervals, most recently the concert series Soundscapes. Richie Herbst is part of the klingt.org-collective.
