Welcome to Chansons’ final concert of our 2024/25 season. We entitled this concert ‘Jubilate’ meaning ‘to have or express great joy’! It was taken from Purcell’s ‘Jubilate, O be joyful in the Lord’, possibly England’s greatest composer. It was also inspired by the selection of three spirituals arranged by the great American composer and arranger of choral music, Moses Hogan. The first half of our programme explores music of the modern age and shows how choral styles have greatly evolved from the baroque style of Purcell’s ’Hear, my prayer, O Lord’. We perform works by a range of modern composers such as Ešenvalds, Gjeilo, Busto and Whitacre, each demonstrating new sounds, forms and harmonic structures to bring old and new texts to life.
In the second half we return largely to the classical forms of the Baroque era with Mendelssohn, Bach and Purcell. We thank Howard Duthie on organ, and Jeremy Fletcher on cello for accompanying us, and hope you can join us to enjoy our ‘jubilant’ and contrasting programme of modern and baroque choral music.
