This event is a unique opportunity to hear from successful Black alumni who have made their mark in various fields. Join us at the Lawrence Lecture Theatre, Poole House, Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus for a panel discussion of information and inspiration. Discover the stories behind their achievements and gain valuable insights for your own journey. The event is a collaboration between Bournemouth University's EDI Team, Fundraising & Alumni Relations Team, and the Race Equality Staff Network. Register now to secure your spot!

Panelists:


Francis Annan graduated from the BA (Hons) Television Production course at BU in 2006 and has since gone on to forge a successful career in TV and film.

Francis is a film director and writer who began his career at the BBC 16 years ago. He has won awards for his short films, directed BBC drama and earlier this year made his directorial debut on the international big screen with the political thriller, Escape from Pretoria, starring Daniel Radcliffe. In 2020 Francis was named one of BU’s Alumni of the Year Award winners.


Dr Kwilole Chisuse van der Boom graduated in Public Relations in 2013. Not only has she forged a career in healthcare communications, but she leads a charity supporting children orphaned by HIV in Zambia.

Kwilole has been actively involved in the Funsani charity since it was launched by her mother in 2002. Today she chairs the charity, which funds the Funsani Home orphanage in Kitwe. The charity provides accommodation, care, education, Medic*tion, and promotes HIV awareness.


Larry Boateng is an experienced management consultant with over seven years experience supporting public and private sector organisations solve some of their most complex technology transformation challenges.
Prior to KPMG, he spent three years with Publicis Sapient focusing on Digital Transformation, covering a broad range of industries including Financial Services, Fast-moving Consumer Goods and Retail. Developing core competencies in driving Digital Transformation programmes and implementing Agile methodology (SAFe & Scrum), whilst building soft skills in client relationship management and people leadership.


Tumisang Thabo Mbedzi graduated from BU in 2021 with a Master’s in Forensic Anthropology and Archaeology (Osteology pathway). Her research landed her a role as a Primary Investigator in a collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

Tumisang has been building on this body of work within the forensic humanitarian sector to aid with the identification of missing migrants. In 2022, she was a recipient of the Humanitarian and Human Rights Resource Centre grant award from the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS). In 2023 she presented her work at the AAFS 75th Anniversary Conference in Florida, Orlando. She was also invited to speak in Kigali, Rwanda at the 10th African Society of Forensic Medicine International Conference.

In January 2023, she implemented an African schools project called ‘Behind The Scenes’. This programme aims to educate and showcase the role of forensic science in various sectors within African communities. These include human identification, crime and law enforcement.
