You’ve learned the dance (or at least you’re starting too), but what about the history? The culture? The people? Shouldn’t we know just as much about those things as the dance itself? How does knowing about the context of the dance affect our dance practice? It makes us better dancers, more culturally aware, and respectful.
Sahra Saeeda’s Journey through Egypt uses dance ethnology concepts and a multi-media/experiential approach, to present the rich story of culture and dance, historical diffusion, costume and dress, posture and movement. JtE-1 & 2 will provide you with the foundation and pre-requisites to attend JtE-3 & 4, where you can experience the movement and culture taught on location in Cairo and Upper Egypt.
Sahra Saeeda has over 20 years of research experience, studying dance ethnology at UCLA and continuing her research throughout the years, and she is bringing this expertise, perspective, and understanding of the dance to New Mexico. Learn more about Sahra here.
