About this Event

This event will take place in person at the Library for the Performing Arts.

The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is pleased to announce a very special evening of magic and history starring world-renowned magician and writer Joshua Jay. In this first part of our jam-packed event, Jay will perform a magic show featuring dazzling sleight-of-hand and mind-reading. Then Herb Scher of the Society of American Magicians will interview Joshua Jay about his new book, How Magicians Think. They will cover magic's hidden psychology, the creative pumps magicians use to design illusions, expert-but-little-known female magicians, as well as the rich history of magic and the impressive holdings that the NYPL contains on the subject of magic.

A Q&A will close out the event, and then all guests are welcome to enjoy a bespoke display case exhibition boasting highlights from the NYPL collection. You'll see fantastic pieces associated with Houdini, Adelaide Hermann, and many of magic's greatest practitioners.

ABOUT HOW MAGICIANS THINK: Magicians are experts at creating a sense of wonder, making audiences believe the impossible is possible, but they never reveal their secrets. Now, Joshua Jay, a critically acclaimed magician who has stumped Penn & Teller and developed illusions for HBO’s Game of Thrones, provides a rare glimpse behind the curtain into a truly secret world in his new book, How Magicians Think: Misdirection, Deception, and Why Magic Matters. Books will be available at the show, and Joshua will be on hand to inscribe them after his performance.

How Magicians Think will be available for purchase at the book signing after the program.

As of March 14, the Library encourages mask wearing in all public spaces.
