azz singer and composer Josefiina Vannesluoma, along with her band Mortal Lease, transforms century-old poems into a sensual jazz expression. Their debut album, The Mortal Lease, nominated for the 2023 Jazz Emma Award, features young top musicians including pianist Mikael Myrskog, bassist Nathan Francis, drummer Ville Luukkonen, and Sampo Kasurinen on alto flute, clarinet, and tenor saxophone. Alongside Vannesluoma, Markus Kärki, known for his work on Signe's To Sappho album and Game Music Collective productions, served as the artistic producer of the album. The album's name and lyrical source, Edith Wharton's poem series The Mortal Lease, tells tales of summer romance, a thirst for life, and the search for meaning through its ornate sonnets. The band's debut is a nuanced collection with moods ranging from ecstatic outbursts to restrained elegance, blending influences from various musical styles into the grounded storytelling of a jazz ensemble.
Vannesluoma, who has previously been recognized with Teosto Award and Emma nominations, showcases her innovative composition and beautiful sound, which have been featured in groups like Signe, Nossa Bossa, and Mikko Sarvanne Garden.
