About this Event
Join violist Jonathan Bagg, longtime member of the Ciompi Quartet, for an intimate and contemplative evening of chamber music that explores memory, reflection, and artistic legacy. Bagg is joined by an ensemble of exceptional guest artists, all celebrated performers known for their versatility, sensitivity, and commitment to contemporary music.
At the heart of the program is a new work by Duke composer Scott Lindroth, whose music is admired for its vivid colors, structural imagination, and emotional immediacy. Lindroth's close collaborations with Duke faculty performers give his pieces a uniquely personal resonance, making this premiere especially meaningful.
Jonathan Bagg will present two works by Duke composer Lindroth, including the premiere of "Middle Voices", a work for viola alone. Guest artists Laura Gilbert, flute; Nicholas DiEugenio, violin; and Raman Ramakrishnan, cello, will join Bagg for Lindroth's 2022 work "Souvenirs". Pianist Mimi Solomon will perform Bagg's arrangement of "Troubled Water" by Margaret Bonds. The concert also includes two other solo viola pieces: "In Memoriam" by Israeli composer Lior Navok, and the Suite, Opus 131 No. 3 by Max Reger. The event celebrates Bagg's 40th year at Duke and the release of his CD "Viola Revival: Mid-Century Works by Marion Bauer, Ulysses Kay & Margaret Bonds".
The concert offers a rich tapestry of musical voices across eras and styles. From Reger's late-Romantic intensity to Navok's lyrical modernism and Bonds's soulful, enduring expressiveness, the program illuminates the many ways composers channel remembrance-of people, places, and artistic traditions-into sound.
Presented in the warm acoustics of the Nelson Music Room, Remembrance invites listeners into a space of thoughtful beauty and profound musical connection.
Free and open to the public. All are welcome.
