Almost exactly two years ago, our friend and frequent musical guest, Jon Shain, asked if Italian guitarist Beppe Gambetta could join him on our stage. We gave Jon an enthusiastic yes, and the result was one of our best-attended and well-received shows of the year. Well, the stars have aligned again, so we're going to host Shain/Ventre/Gambetta show one more time. For local music lovers, this is opportunity knocking a second time, so please come to the show and help us spread the word about this special show.
One of our most popular repeat acts here at the farm is singer-songwriter-guitarist JON SHAIN and his musical partner FJ Ventre, who are returning to Doodad Farm for their seventh feature show on Friday, June 7 at 7pm. Jon Shain (www.jonshain.com) is a veteran singer-songwriter who’s been turning heads for years with his words, his fiery acoustic guitar work, and his evolved musical style – combining improvised piedmont blues with bluegrass, swing, and ragtime. He is the 2019 winner of the International Blues Challenge in the solo/duo category. Shain’s newest album, "Restless Soul Syndrome," recorded at Good Luck Studio this past year, was released April 9, 2024. Shain is also the author of the music books Gettin’ Handy With the Blues – a Tribute to the Legacy of W.C. Handy and Jon Shain’s Fingerstyle Guitar Method, both published by Mel Bay Publications.
FJ VENTRE and Jon began playing music together in 1982 when they met in high school. FJ went on to University of Massachusetts-Lowell, earning a B.A. in Music Performance and Sound Recording. He remained in the Boston area, performing in the city’s vibrant music scene. Since relocating to Chapel Hill, NC in 2000, Ventre has performed with his own group The Swang Brothers, as well as Chris Stamey, Rebecca and the Hi-Tones, and Matt Hill. In addition to performing as a sought after sideman, he spends his time behind the mixing board, engineering at his own Good Luck Studio and operating his graphic design firm Tadpole Designs.
BEPPE GAMBETTA (www.beppegambetta.com) is a guitarist, vocalist, researcher and composer born in Genova, Italy in 1955 who developed a style of concert presentation that brings American and European Roots to speak together with one voice. In his unique approach, Gambetta blends energetic grooves with passionate melodies, giving new life to sources from different times, periods and places. In addition, the original music he composes gives contemporary influences to traditional roots music.
We'll start the show right about 7pm. Feel free to show up earlier than that, even, if you just want to enjoy the weather, have a picnic, or just hang out (though we may ask you to help set up!).
Doodad Farm never charges for entry to concerts, though we do request that those who are able (and you know who you are) donate at the stage area. Every penny of donations goes straight to the performers. We think $20-$25 is a reasonable donation for this show. There will also be an opportunity to buy CDs and other merchandise, and that's an even better way to contribute. As always, we ask that you surprise yourself with your own generosity to support our performers.
Other details:
• Kids, dogs, and all your friends are always welcome.
• Please bring CASH for your donation to the performers and for merch purchases.
• This is an outside, farm like setting (thus the name). Dress like you’re going camping and you’ll be fine.
• We never allow weapons of any sort at the farm. If you think you need to protect yourself, you’re in the wrong place.
• Bring your own beverages, and consume them responsibly. Of course snacks and picnics are welcome.
• If you’re a sitter, bring a chair. We have some extras if you forget.
• Smoking is permitted as long as you don’t bother anyone or do any butt-dropping.
• Please clean up after yourself and treat the Farm as if it’s your own (in a way, it is!).
• A portable toilet and drinking water will be available.
• Let someone help you park, especially if the field is wet.
