Arguably one of the greatest, most creative and most subversive British bands of the past half century, The Mekons were first formed in 1976 by Jon Langford and a group of University of Leeds art student friends. Their initial LPs and 45s were edgy, aggressive post-punk gems like “Never Been In A Riot”, but in the mid-1980s, with the addition of vocalist Sally Timms and several new members, they re-emerged playing a brilliant, surreal and nearly unclassifiable mix of alt-country, honky tonk and punk rock on LPs like their masterpiece Fear and Whiskey (1985), The Edge of the World (1986), The Mekons Honky Tonkin’ (1987), The Mekons Rock ‘n Roll (1989) and many since. Langford’s incredibly restless and creative musical imagination has also given birth to a number of related projects including The Waco Brothers, The Three Johns, The Pine Valley Cosmonauts and now The Bright Shiners.

Jon Langford has been a constant fixture on the fringes of the music industry and art world for the last three decades, irons in the fire, plates in the air, occasionally, accidentally in tune with current fads and phases but happier charting his own contrary course through the choppy waters of popular culture. The Welsh born artist and musician, who relocated to Chicago in 1992, has a degree in fine art from the University of Leeds where (in great British art school tradition) he downed brushes to co-found that seminal punk rock band, The Mekons in 1977. Jon currently performs with Chicago Hard Country legends the Waco Brothers and has a new album out this spring with his new band The Bright Shiners.
Known for his merging of country music themes with striking visuals Langford has produced album covers for artists as diverse as Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Buddy Guy, Hound Dog Taylor and Trio featuring Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. In 2015 Langford was Artist in Residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and worked on visuals for the acclaimed DYLAN, CASH and the NASHVILLE CATS exhibit. During this period he began working with Hatch Show-print master printer Jim Sherraden and under their aliases Bishop Biscuit and Father Drogo in recent years they have produced a series of collaborative works for their touring COMPLICATED CHARACTERS Art show.
Sally Timms was born in Leeds, England. She grew up in the Yorkshire dales, sang in the church choir and performed in poetry recitals as a child. In 1985 she joined the Mekons as a full-time member and has regretted it ever since. Unfortunately, the only way out of the Mekons is in a box, so she's still there. Known as one of the laziest women in show business, she frequently calls in favors from her most talented and successful friends so that she can dedicate more time to watching television and eating bananas. She has blonde hair, gray eyes, and appalling mood swings.
