Joke Lanz is the lead singer and founder of the band Sudden Infant, a member of the Schimpfluch Group (alongside Rudolf Eb.er, Dave Phillips, Marc Zeier, and Daniel Löwenbrück), and he performs in various duos and ensembles within the realm of improvised music, collaborating with artists such as Shelley Hirsch, Christian Weber, Sophie Agnel, Ute Wassermann, Michael Vatcher, Olaf Rupp, Alexandre Babel, and Charlotte Hug.
Lanz was the bassist and vocalist for the hardcore band Jaywalker from 1986 to 1988. In 1989, he established the project Sudden Infant, which evolved into a trio in 2014, featuring Christian Weber on bass and Alexandre Babel on drums. From 1998 to 2000, he contributed to the MK Selection alongside Marco Käppeli, Hämi Hämmerli, Bruno Amstad, and Günter Weiss on turntables.
Between 2004 and 2008, he was the vocalist and frontman of the electro-industrial duo Catholic Boys In Heavy Leather, collaborating with Roger Rotor. This duo performed at various industrial and EBM festivals, including Maschinenfest, Elektroanschlag, Schlagstrom, BIM Fest, and Summer Darkness.
Lanz operates at the intersection of improvised and experimental music, merging noise with turntablism and performance art with Musique Concrète. His work encompasses theater and film soundtracks, radio projects, installations, and objects, with two constants running through it: his role as a turntablist, manipulating turntables and vinyl records, and his ongoing project Sudden Infant.
In 2019, the documentary film My Life Is a Gunshot about Joke Lanz, directed by Marcel Derek Ramsay, was released in cinemas.
