The Beach Haven Library will host Margaret Thomas Buchholtz on April 25th at 1:00 pm as she presents a slide show and dramatic readings from her classic book New Jersey Shipwrecks: 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic.
From the days of sail to steam and oil, ships of all types have been drawn to our coast. For thousands of vessels, it became their final resting place.
Mrs. Buchholz will explore the gripping history of this “graveyard” -- a name bestowed upon the state’s treacherous shoals and inlets -- along with the development of the U.S. Coast Guard from its 1848 origin as the Lifesaving Service, through illustrations, photographs, and readings from the harrowing memories of survivors and observers.
Join us for this gripping voyage! Call the library at 609-492-7081 or email [email protected] to register.
Margaret Thomas Buchholz was born in Manhattan and moved with her parents to Long Beach Island just in time to be evacuated by the Coast Guard during a northeaster. She started her education in a one-room school in Barnegat Light. After graduating Cedar Crest College, she and her husband purchased The Beachcomber, which she published seasonally for 35 years. After selling the publication to Jersey Shore Newsmagazines, she stayed on as editor. She currently divides her time between Key West, Maine and Harvey Cedars on Barnegat Bay, where her family has been coming since the middle of the 19th Century.
