I'm excited to announce that we are bringing back the Johnson County Hay Show! Johnson County residents can submit hay samples to the office from October 6-19th. The winners of the contest will be announced at the Johnson County Hay Show program on November 20th from 6-8 pm in Cleburne.Entry Rules:
- Sample must be from this year’s hay, raised in Johnson County.
- Hay samples may be from either square or round bales.
- They may not be taken from outer 4-6 inches of round bales. -
- Samples from square bales should be from middle of the bale.
Sample Submission
- Participants should submit at least 1 gallon sized bag of hay and no more than half a feed sack full.
- Entire bales will not be accepted.
Sample Testing
- Samples will be sent to Texas A&M Forage Lab.
- Individual results will be given to participant once received from the lab.
- Hay samples will be scored based on ADF, TDN and % Crude Protein.
Awards
- Recognition of Overall Top 10% of entries.
- Best in Show the following categories:
* Bermudagrass
* C-4 Perennial (switchgrass, big bluestem, indiangrass, bahia)
* C-3 Grass (wheat, oats, rye, barley, triticale, annual ryegrass)
* Legume (alfalfa dominated, clover dominated)
* 4-H Entry (must be submitted by a Johnson County 4-H member involved in the production of the hay)
All results will be announced at the Johnson County Hay Show on Thursday, November 20th from 6-8 pm at the Cleburne Conference Center. More details to come. Program will feature dinner, forage talk from our AgriLife Forage Specialist, and contest awards.
