Those in Johnson County with eligible criminal records who have paid their debt to society will be offered the opportunity to gain a fresh start through a one-day expungement clinic.
The event was created to offer a "new beginning" to individuals who are eligible to clear their misdemeanor and/or felony criminal records. Evidence shows that carrying a record can have a profoundly negative effect on such persons including the inability for them to find housing employment or being able to obtain professional licenses. In some cases record of a criminal conviction can also mean trouble with immigration status child custody or obtaining a loan.
Expungement of misdemeanor and/or felony criminal records benefit not only the individuals but also society. By expanding their opportunities to find housing and employment streets and communities are in turn made safer.
Expungement also addresses the issue of systemic racial and ethnic bias in the criminal justice system in which persons of color are disproportionately represented. Providing an avenue for them to break free of the vicious cycle which often ensnares them allows for a return to society with long-term hopes of bettering themselves.
It is important to note that being granted an expungement depends on a number of factors including whether or not one has successfully completed the terms of their sentence as well as evidence that they have been successfully rehabilitated since their conviction.
