From its first pirate, William Claiborne, to the infamous Captain Kidd, commerce raiders influenced the ebb and flow of the bay’s economy. Learn about these maritime marauders from Dr. Jamie L.H. Goodall, an expert on Atlantic World piracy and privateering, particularly during its Golden Age from 1650 to 1730. Her talk will focus heavily on individual stories based on locals like William Claiborne and Richard Ingle, who pillaged and plundered their way between Baltimore and Hampton Roads.
Speaker Bio: Jamie L.H. Goodall, PhD, is a historian with the U.S. Army Center of Military History* in Washington, D.C. She has a PhD in History from The Ohio State University with specializations in Atlantic World, Early American, and Military histories. She is also a first-generation college student. Her publications include Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars (2020); National Geographic's Pirates: Shipwrecks, Conquests, and Their Lasting Legacies (2021); Pirates & Privateers from Long Island Sound to Delaware Bay (2022); and The Daring Exploits of Pirate Black Sam Bellamy: From Cape Cod to the Caribbean (2023). She also writes on U.S. Army history, academic mentorship, the experiences of first-gen students, and pedagogy. Goodall has also shared her expertise on programs like Mysteries from Above (2022) and History Channel's History's Greatest Mysteries (2024).
