In 1870 the first census for Las Vegas identified eight people, including familiar names like O.D. Gass. Three of the people in the census were indigenous women living with a man of mixed race originally from North Carolina. John Howell was a rancher, farmer, teamster and miner who owned the Spring Rancho, original site of the Springs Preserve. Join Nathan Harper, Southern Nevada Water Authority Archaeologist to learn about the life and legacy of this southern Nevada pioneer.
Nathan Harper is the archaeologist for the Southern Nevada Water District protecting and preserving history and archaeology at the Springs Preserve, Warm Springs Natural Area and other Authority properties throughout southern Nevada.
