John Hasselback III - Trumpet and Flugelhorn

A native of Buffalo, New York, Dr. John Hasselback III is an award winning lyrical trumpet soloist, composer, educator, and music-industry professional. His vibrant sound bridges the rich tradition of jazz with a forward-looking creative vision.

Hasselback has sharpened his voice both on the bandstand and in the classroom, balancing rigorous study with real-world performance. He was awarded a prestigious full-tuition Doctoral Fellowship at the Eastman School of Music, a Graduate Talent Scholarship at the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College, and a full-tuition scholarship to the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School of Music. Throughout his education, Hasselback had the privilege of studying with master trumpeters including Freddie Hendrix, Ingrid Jensen, Jon Faddis, and Clay Jenkins, as well as renowned arrangers Dave Rivello and Bill Dobbins.

Nationally recognized for both his artistry and leadership, Hasselback was selected for the prestigious Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program in 2016, named Buffalo’s Jazz Rising Star in 2017, and recognized as the Hartford Jazz Society’s Emerging Jazz Artist in 2018. He was also a recipient of the 2019 Pathways to Jazz grant. His critically acclaimed debut album of original compositions, Entrance (2021), features an all-star lineup including trombonist Steve Davis, saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, drummer Jonathan Barber, pianist Taber Gable, and bassist Luques Curtis. The album reached the top 20 on jazz radio charts in both the U.S. and Europe. In honor of his significant contributions to music, culture, and arts education in his community, the New York State Legislature of Erie County has issued formal resolutions celebrating Hasselback’s achievements.

Hasselback has performed alongside numerous Grammy Award-winning artists and esteemed musicians, including Steve Davis, Rene McLean, Nat Reeves, Gary Smulyan, Wayne Escoffery, Pete Malinverni, Doug Weiss, Jay Ashby, Jamey Haddad, Ken Peplowski, Joe Lovano, and NEA Jazz Master Jimmy Heath among many others. He has performed at top-tier venues such as The Blue Note, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club, The Apollo Music Café, The Side Door Jazz Club, The Northwest Jazz Festival, The Albright Knox Summer Jazz Stage, The Handel Performing Arts Center, The Purchase Performing Arts Center, The White Plains Jazz Festival, The Hartford Jazz Cruise, and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. As a leader in his current projects, Hasselback continues to develop his compositional voice. His work embraces both intimate jazz chamber music and expansive pieces for jazz and symphonic orchestras.

Driven by a passion for music teaching and learning, Dr. Hasselback has held faculty positions as Instructor of Jazz Trumpet and Ensembles at Syracuse University, Instructor of Jazz Theory and Ensembles at the Eastman School of Music, and as the James R. ’58 and Susan Neumann Postdoctoral Fellow in Jazz History at the Oberlin Conservatory. Hasselback is currently an Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at SUNY Purchase College. He frequently serves as a clinician and guest artist, engaging with music education organizations, students, and ensembles nationwide.

Matt Dechamplain - Piano

Pianist Matt DeChamplain grew up in Wethersfield, Connecticut. During high school Matt attended the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts studying under Jimmy Greene and Dave Santoro. He obtained his bachelors degree from the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School in 2010 and graduated with his masters from the University of Toledo in Ohio in 2012.

Matt has performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, Berks Jazz Festival, New York’s JVC Jazz Festival, the Berklee Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center and renowned jazz clubs such as the Regatta Bar, Smalls and Yoshi’s. In 2008, Matt was selected for the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program where he engaged in a two week intensive composition and performance workshop under the instruction of jazz luminaries Dr. Billy Taylor, Nathan Davis and Curtis Fuller culminating in three performances filmed live from the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. That same year he was part of a group lead by bassist Nat Reeves that toured New Ross, Ireland. In 2010, Matt participated as a semifinalist in the Martial Solal Jazz Piano Competition in Paris, France.

As a sideman, Matt has appeared on guitarist Norman Johnson’s album “Get It While You Can” (2011), jazz violinist Jason Anick’s album “Tipping Point” (2012), and recorded several songs with vocal legend Jon Hendricks for “Holiday Wishes II: River of Stars” (2013). Also in 2013, he recorded a solo piano album titled “Stride-Bop” that sought to fuse the Harlem stride tradition with bebop and hardbop language. “Jazz’s rich heritage has been such an inspiration to me, and I hope that my combination of stride, swing, bebop and blues elements in these arrangements and compositions will honor it.” In 2015, Matt and his wife vocalist Atla DeChamplain released their first collaboration together titled “Pause.” The album features a guest appearance by Hendricks.

Currently Matt is Assistant Professor of Jazz at the Hartt School (University of Hartford, Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz). He has also taught at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts, led the big band at Glastonbury High School and taught at the Artist’s Collective, the Litchfield Jazz Camp and New Hampshire’s Jazz All State.

While maintaining an active performance and teaching schedule, Matt continues to arrange and compose.

Alex Tremblay - Bass

Bassist, Composer, and Educator, Alex Tremblay has been on the scene in New York City since 2013. Alex began performing and composing music at a young age and would go on to the esteemed Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford to further his studies and earn his Bachelor’s of Music. With wide-ranging influences spanning from the likes of Ray Brown and Ron Carter to James Jamerson and Jaco Pastorious, Alex has been able to formulate a sound and style that has found him playing with, touring, and recording consistently throughout his career with many of NYC’s top artists. He has regularly led bands and performed at some of the premier jazz venues in NY, including Birdland, Smalls, Mezzrow, Ornithology, and Blue Note, just to name a few.

As a composer, he draws influences from his love of many different genres of music. His music has been described as “Swinging”, “Soulful”, “Heartfelt”, and “Empathetic”. He currently has released three albums under his own name, People and Places (La Reserve, 2025), Miss You, Dear Old Friend (La Reserve, 2024), and his debut record Thoughts and Images (La Reserve, 2022). His albums have been widely received in the US and abroad and have achieved over 2.5 million streams as well as having been featured on some of today’s top jazz playlists across the streaming platforms.

As an educator Alex has maintained a consistent schedule conducting ensembles, masterclasses, private lessons, and assisting in developing and directing programs with organizations such as Newport Festivals Foundation and BackCountry Jazz.

Jordan Young - Alto Saxophone

Jordan Young is a saxophonist, composer, and arranger that has worked with Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Nia Love, Onaje Allen Gumbs, Lenny White, Craig Harris, Dick Griffin, Nasheet Waits, Darrell Green, DJ Logic, Don McKenzie, Ravi Coltrane, Sam Newsome, Melissa Aldana, James Brandon Lewis, Marcus Miller, Patrice Rushen, Buster Williams, Stanley Clarke, George Colligan, Vince Wilburn, Mino Cinelu, and Damien Escobar amongst others. Notable performance venues include Jazz in the Valley, Seattle Children’s Theatre, New Jersey Performing Arts Center, The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Roulette Intermedium, Blue Note New York, Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. He has contributed music to Christina Kallas' award winning feature film "Paris is in Harlem" and scored numerous short films for filmmakers throughout the tri-state. He scored, sound designed and performed in BKBX Mime Theatre Company’s play for kids at the 14th street Y and Seattle Children Theatre. He has been the recipient of the 2023 NYFA Queens Artist Fund and the 2024 Looking Glass Arts Multidisciplinary Residency and the 2025 Looking Glass Arts Cheswatyr Residency. His band has performed throughout the tri-state as well as the Baby Grand Jazz festival in Hartford, Connecticut and the Colored Colors Spring Fling Festival in Hudson Yards, New York.

In the event of a pandemic, rain, snow, or other forms of weather which prohibit a performance, the performance date will be postponed and rescheduled for another date within a reasonable amount of time. If the new date is postponed, a future alternate date will be picked at the discretion of Bethel Jazz and the musical artist. The ticket holder will be notified of postponements, cancelations, and rescheduled dates via email. Tickets are non-refundable and may be transferred to another person in the event a purchaser can not make the rescheduled date. In the event, an artist cancels a date, and Bethel Jazz is unable to reschedule the artist, Bethel Jazz reserves the right to provide a substitute performer of equal quality without notice to the ticket purchaser. If a date is canceled and not rescheduled, Bethel Jazz will provide a refund (in some cases minus the Eventbrite fee) or credit for another performance at the choice of the ticket holder. Bethel Jazz will always do its best to accommodate for changes in seating, table sizes, or changes to tickets.
