Jayne Horror is a heavily-tattooed model with a gentle and enigmatic face. ARB Studios is a relatively-new studio, with a lot of sets offering a choice of natural light, studio flash or continuous light, and a fully-darkened area with a white infinity curve. The owner, Amy, is hospitable and knowledgeable.We will work our way through six lighting setups in the space of the four hours, and there will be a handout to explain the basics of each of them.
We’ll begin with natural light portraits in the bedroom set area – you will have the chance to shoot both with the light and against it, to compare and contrast the ways in which you need to judge exposure for the two. A short telephoto lens (75 to 105mm on full frame) is ideal.
We will use split lighting for a low-key art nude look, including the secret of darkening backgrounds. It’s simpler than you thought…
Any model with extensive tattoos invites bodyscape images. We will look at how to place a model so that it is easy to take such images, and consider the different approaches to lighting and composing images, along with ways to style the background to avoid it being intrusive.
Jayne’s alternative look cries out for an Urbex background, and we will use strong sidelighting and possibly coloured gels or LED lamps to bring out textures and shadows in the background.
A big challenge for many photographers is working in very low light levels, and we will explore this with a dark background and the illumination of a single candle. We’ll deal with the need to choose and use a single focus point, and the way in which composition can easily affect exposure.
We will finish with nude images against the white infinity cove, evenly and brightly lit – the classic setup for high key art nudes.
The workshop will run from eleven in the morning to three in the afternoon. Light refreshments, including vegetable samosas, will be available throughout.
