Hadrian’s Wall, originally built to “separate the Romans from the barbarians”, has evolved into a symbol that unites people. This was poignantly illustrated in September 2023, when the felling of the iconic tree at Sycamore Gap provoked widespread shock and sadness across Britain and beyond.
In this captivating talk, David Breeze delves into the life and contributions of John Collingwood Bruce, a pivotal Victorian figure in the promotion and preservation of Hadrian’s Wall. Bruce, commemorated in Newcastle Cathedral, played a crucial role in sparking public interest and scholarly study of the Wall. His legacy includes a series of influential books that remain in print today and the establishment of Pilgrimages to the Wall, a tradition that continues every ten years. The most recent pilgrimage, the 14th, was led by David Breeze in 2019 and attracted over 200 people.
David will explore Bruce’s enduring impact on the appreciation and understanding of Hadrian’s Wall and its significance in Northern England’s regional identity.
